i’ve been thinking a lot about the demonization of dandelions and how that relates to taught prejudice and discrimination.
dandelions are viewed as weeds, they’re killed and plucked and often viewed as unsightly. however, dandelions actually offer a plethora of benefits. they’re incredible for pollinators (save the bees!!!) and are not only edible to humans, but can act as a natural source of immunity and health benefits.
children often see their beauty and do not view dandelions as weeds. children will pick them when they’re yellow and want to put them in water like any other flower. when they’re white, they’re a source of whimsy and wishes. it is only when children grow that they learn to view dandelions as weeds.
hatred for dandelions is taught.
racism is taught.
sexism is taught.
classism is taught.
hatred is taught.
what kind of world would it be if children were never stripped of their love for the world? what if our eyes were never taught to view beauty as something bad? what if differences were approached with curiosity and not cruelty?
i wish to live in a world with dandelion colored glasses.
